Starting something new can feel intimidating - especially for kids. The good news is, the first month of karate (or Taekwondo) is designed to be welcoming, gentle, and progressive. Here's exactly what to expect during those first four weeks at a White Rock martial-arts academy so you can walk in confident.
Before your first class
Wear comfortable athletic clothes (a t-shirt and track pants or shorts). Bring a water bottle. Arrive 10 minutes early so we can introduce you to the instructor, give you a quick tour, and walk you through how the classroom flows.
Week 1 - the basics
Your first class will cover stances (how to stand), one or two simple kicks (typically a front kick and a roundhouse), a basic block, and how to bow. Don't worry about being perfect - the goal is to get comfortable on the mat. By the end of the first week, you'll know the names of the instructors and most of the students, and you'll feel less like a stranger.
Week 2 - adding combinations
Now you'll start linking moves together - kick into a punch, block into a counter, and so on. You'll also begin learning your first form (a choreographed sequence of moves). This is where it starts to feel like real martial arts, not just exercise.
Week 3 - partner drills
By the third week, you'll be working with a partner on basic targets - pads and shields - and practicing controlled distance. You'll feel your conditioning improve. Soreness eases. Confidence grows.
Week 4 - first belt test on the horizon
By the end of the first month, you'll know enough material to test for your first stripe or your next belt. Testing happens roughly every 8-10 weeks, but new students often complete a beginner cycle within their first month.
What to practice at home
- Run through the form you've learned, slowly, three times a day
- Practice your bow - at the door of the studio, before and after
- Do five minutes of stretching nightly to build flexibility
- Repeat the instructor's name and how to address them (Mr./Ms.) so it becomes automatic
